Amex Construction – Questions & Answers
Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve gathered the most common questions about septic systems, sewer tie-ins, excavation, home building, commercial construction, and general contracting. This page is updated regularly to reflect what clients ask us most.
Septic Systems & Title V
What is a Title V septic inspection in Massachusetts?
A Title V inspection is a state-mandated evaluation of your septic system. It is often required when selling a home, adding bedrooms, or expanding a property. The inspection checks the tank, leaching field, soil conditions, and overall compliance with Title V regulations.
How much does a septic system replacement cost in Massachusetts?
Most systems range from $20,000 to $40,000+ depending on the design, soil conditions, and size of the home. Costs may increase if pumps, raised systems, or difficult site access are required. We provide detailed estimates based on your property.
How long does a new septic system last?
With regular pumping and maintenance, a new septic system typically lasts 25 to 30 years. Soil type, water table, and how much water the household uses can shorten or extend that lifespan.
Do septic systems require ongoing maintenance?
Yes. Septic tanks should usually be pumped annually & inspected every 2–3 years depending on household size. Failing to maintain the system can lead to backups, costly repairs, and potential Title V failure.
Can a septic system freeze in winter?
It’s rare, but in very cold conditions and shallow installations, septic pipes can freeze. Good design, proper burial depth, and installation prevent this issue.
Sewer Connections & Tie-Ins
Can you connect my property to the town sewer line?
Yes. We handle excavation, pipe installation, and full coordination with municipal inspectors and DPW officials to make sure your connection is approved and up to code.
Do I need a permit for a sewer tie-in?
Every sewer connection requires permits through your town or city. We handle all paperwork and coordinate inspections to keep the project moving.
How long does a sewer connection take?
Most residential tie-ins take one to three days once permits are approved, though the timeline may be longer if the line crosses a street or involves complex engineering.
Excavation & Site Work
What types of excavation do you provide?
We handle foundation digging, grading, drainage systems, utility trenches, retaining walls, and demolition. Our equipment and crews are equipped for residential and commercial projects.
How deep are utility trenches dug in Massachusetts?
Depth depends on the utility. Water lines often require four to five feet of depth to stay below frost level, while electric conduits may only need 18 to 24 inches. We follow local code for every trench.
Do you provide drainage and water management solutions?
Yes. We install curtain drains, dry wells, catch basins, and regrade land to ensure proper drainage and to prevent flooding and foundation damage.
General Contracting & Home Building
Are you a general contractor or just an excavation company?
We are both. Amex Construction is a licensed general contractor that manages entire projects from concept through completion. We self-perform site work but also oversee framing, finishes, utilities, and inspections.
Do you build custom homes in Massachusetts?
Yes. We design and build new homes tailored to each client’s needs, whether it’s a modest family house or a larger estate build. We manage permitting, subcontractors, and scheduling.
How long does it take to build a new home?
Most custom homes take 6 to 12 months depending on size, complexity, and permitting timelines. Weather and material availability can also affect schedules.
Do I need an architect to build a new home?
You don’t always need one. We can work with your architect’s plans or provide design-build services where we manage both design and construction.
Can you handle additions or major renovations?
Yes. We regularly build additions, garages, decks, and full home renovations. We manage the project start to finish so you don’t have to coordinate multiple contractors.
Commercial Construction
What types of commercial projects do you take on?
We build and renovate office buildings, retail stores, restaurants, and light industrial facilities. Projects can range from interior fit-outs to ground-up builds.
Do you respond to commercial construction bids?
Yes. We work with municipalities, developers, and private owners on competitive bids. We provide detailed proposals and can manage everything from sitework to final occupancy.
How do you keep commercial projects on schedule?
We use detailed project schedules, weekly coordination meetings, and strong on-site management to keep costs and timelines under control.
Permits, Inspections & Regulations
Who handles permits and inspections for my project?
We do. As a general contractor, we take responsibility for all permits and inspections whether it’s septic, sewer, new construction, or commercial building.
What inspections should I expect during construction?
Depending on the project, you may need trench inspections, septic or sewer inspections, framing checks, electrical and plumbing sign-offs, and a final certificate of occupancy. We coordinate all of these with local inspectors.
Costs, Timing & Logistics
Do you provide free estimates?
Yes. We provide free written estimates across all services: septic systems, sewer tie-ins, excavation, new home construction, and commercial building.
How soon can you start my project?
Small projects can often start within 2 to 4 weeks after permits are approved. Large custom homes and commercial builds are scheduled based on design and financing milestones.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept checks, bank transfers, and other options for larger projects such as septic replacements or new home builds.
